During the early 1920s, campers at Allegany State Park stayed in large canvas tents acquired as World War I surplus, and the original tents were later improved with wooden sides to create "tent cabins." A circa 1925 photograph shows these surplus tents at Camp GO-HA-DA-GOH, the first girls' camp in Allegany State Park, and early campers at a tent cabin performing camp chores circa 1930. In 1926, the Allegany State Park Commission approved a resolution allowing private individuals to build cabins in the park on the understanding that they would become state property, while setting guidelines for their design and location. Those who built cabins could use them rent-free for five years and afterward were given preference over others who wished to rent them. The first all-wooden cabin in Allegany State Park was built in 1925 by Louis G. Schlehr, an engraver from Buffalo, NY, who shipped it to the park in sections for assembly at its present location in the Parallel Camp.
