Lieutenant Edward F. Beale surveyed this route in 1857–1858, and a railroad survey followed in 1858–1859. The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad was built across Arizona along this route in 1882–1883, and its tracks reached Kingman in the spring of 1883. U.S. Highway 66 closely follows Beale's survey.
