The Thunderer is a 10,558-foot mountain in Yellowstone National Park’s northeastern Absaroka Range, more a long, elevated ridge than an isolated summit. Rising just north of Mount Norris, it stands out from the park’s northeast entrance road as that route climbs through Soda Butte Creek canyon. Its name was assigned during the Arnold Hague Geological Survey of 1885 because the ridge was known to attract thunderstorms; before that, it was generally regarded simply as the ridge extending north from Mount Norris. The mountain also figures in local backcountry travel, with the Thunderer Cutoff Trail reaching its north end by way of Chaw Pass and connecting to the Cache Creek trail.
