Archaeologists unearthed the ruins of a colonial structure at this location and found evidence of a house made of coquina blocks with a tabby floor. The structure was as large as 27 by 18 feet and may represent the house that John Hewitt purchased with the 1,000 acres of land on which his sawmill was built. Artifacts recovered from the site suggest it was a domestic dwelling, including ceramic plate fragments, wine bottle shards, a broken knife, part of a brass buckle, wrought iron nails, and bones from deer, turkey, and other animals hunted for food. These artifacts are generally of British manufacture and date the building to the late 18th century. Archaeologists also found the remains of a similar building nearby from the same period.
