Mount Florence
Nature
Mount Florence rises in the Tuolumne Meadows region of Yosemite National Park, deep in the backcountry, where its remote setting and dramatic Sierra approaches are central to its appeal. The mountain is Yosemite’s tenth highest peak and is considered a non-technical summit, reached most easily by a class 2 scramble, though it is not often climbed. John Muir named it for Florence “Floy” Hutchings, the first white child born in Yosemite Valley, in 1864. Remembered as the "Yosemite Tomboy" for her fearless, unconventional spirit, she also served as caretaker of the Yosemite Valley Chapel before her death at age seventeen in 1881.
