Hills Creek State Park is a 407-acre Pennsylvania state park on the Allegheny Plateau near Wellsboro and Mansfield, centered on the 137-acre man-made Hills Creek Lake. Opened in 1953 on former pigment mine land, the park takes its name from Hills Creek, named for early settler Captain William Hill and dammed in the early 1950s to form the lake. The earthen dam, built by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, created a year-round recreation area known for warm-water fishing, boating without gas motors, camping, and summer swimming. Wildlife is a major attraction, with beavers, waterfowl, bald eagles, ospreys, black bear, deer, and other animals found throughout the park.
