Spencer Spit State Park occupies 138 acres on Lopez Island’s eastern shore in Washington’s San Juan archipelago, where a narrow sand spit encloses a lagoon beside Lopez Sound. For generations, Native American communities traveling the coast stopped here to clam, crab, and fish, a pattern that lasted until 1946. The land later passed from 1870s homesteaders Katherine and Franklin Troxell to Ray and Kate Spencer, who built a small cabin and lived here for 50 years. Remains of the Spencer homestead survive, and the property became state land in 1967 to help preserve its undeveloped shoreline, bird habitat, and distinctive mix of lagoon, forest, and open water.
