Blind Island Marine State Park occupies all of tiny Blind Island near Shaw Island in Washington’s San Juan Islands. Less than three acres in size, it is managed by Washington State Parks and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and is part of the San Juan Islands National Monument. The island’s recorded history centers on John Fox, a German immigrant and former fisherman who homesteaded there in the late 1800s; his son remained until the mid-1960s. Traces of their isolated homestead, including rock cisterns and a spring retainer, still remain. Since becoming a state park in 1970, it has served mainly as a marine stopover for non-motorized boaters and wildlife viewers.
