Science & Tech
Burkeville Covered Bridge in Burkeville, Conway, Massachusetts, carries Main Poland Road over the South River and was probably built in 1870 after a major flood damaged an earlier crossing on the site in 1869. It is one of the few surviving 19th-century covered bridges in Massachusetts and an uncommon regional example of a multiple kingrod bridge with iron tensioning verticals in a modified Howe truss system. The narrow one-lane wooden bridge has endured hurricane, snow, and safety-related closures, followed by repairs and restoration, and reopened to vehicular traffic in 2013. Its importance reflects both its rarity and its connection to Burkeville’s industrial past.
