Hart Memorial Park, north of Bakersfield, began in 1921 when County Supervisor John Hart secured riverside land for a public retreat along the Kern River. Planned by landscape architect Howard Gilkey, it grew slowly through private donations, volunteer labor, and later Works Progress Administration support, opening in 1929 and reaching completion in 1936. Once far more elaborate than today, it included lakes, a swimming pool, bath house, amusement rides, and a zoo. Renamed in 1947, it later declined as attractions disappeared, yet it remains an important regional green space whose landscape preserves Bakersfield’s long civic investment in public recreation.
