Mount Aetna
Nature
Mount Aetna is a prominent 13,745-foot summit in central Colorado’s Sawatch Range, within San Isabel National Forest near Monarch Pass. Although it ranks 129th among Colorado’s highest peaks, it stands out for its steep rise, symmetrical shape, and strong visual presence above the Middle Fork of the South Arkansas River. Its name reflects a resemblance to Mount Etna in Sicily, reinforced by a striking talus gully that suggests flowing lava even though the mountain is not volcanic. Long recognized by at least 1910 and later officially adopted in federal geographic naming, it remains notable for its alpine climate, visibility, and strenuous ascent.
