Mount Antero, a 14,276-foot peak in central Colorado, is the highest summit of the southern Sawatch Range and the eleventh-highest mountain in the state. Named for Chief Antero of the Uintah band of the Ute people, it is especially notable for rich gemstone deposits, including one of the highest concentrations of aquamarine in the United States. Private mining claims are still worked there, shaping activity on the mountain, especially on its north side. Surveyed by the Pike Expedition in 1806, Mount Antero is also a popular fourteener and endurance destination, valued for its alpine prominence, mineral wealth, and historical associations.
