Taliesin West in Scottsdale became Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert studio, winter home, and school after he and the Taliesin Fellowship chose the site in 1937 and built it up from a primitive camp beginning in 1938. Using local stone, canvas-roofed structures, and a 45-degree grid of linked courts and walkways, Wright shaped a complex meant to feel part of the desert itself. Expanded over time, it included workspaces, living quarters, and performance areas. The property also preserves Hohokam petroglyphs and artifacts from much older human presence. Now headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, it is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a World Heritage Site.
