Rick and Cindy Wright have spent their adult lives living in and serving the Upland community. Both originally from the area, Rick graduated from Mississinewa High School and Cindy from Eastbrook High School in 1969, and after marrying in 1972 they made Upland their home. Rick belonged to the Upland Jaycees from 1974 to 1976 and then joined the Upland Lions Club in October 1976. Cindy was the charter president of the Upland Lioness Club in 1983, and when Lions International opened membership to women in 1991, she and other Lionesses joined the Lions Club. Rick's first project as a Lion was chairing the Upland Labor Day parade in 1979, and he and Cindy have chaired it ever since. Cindy was a charter member of Our Town Upland in 1992 and helped bring the Depot back to Upland, while Rick worked with her to prepare the building for its return and placement in Depot Park. Rick also found the 1923 Pennsylvania Steel Caboose in Carlisle, Ohio Historical Park and worked with the Town of Upland to move it to Depot Park in 2009. In 1997, Cindy worked with Nancy Gore to establish the Upland Area Historical Society, which set up the Depot museum and designed the History Wall in the park, decorates the Depot each year for Christmas, maintains the museum, and opens it for summer tours. Cindy has served on the Olde Tyme Christmas committee since 1992 and on the Blooms-N-Berries Festival committee since it began in 2001. She also co-chaired with Nancy Gore the establishment of the Upland Area Greenways Association, Inc. in 2000 and helped reorganize and incorporate it in 2014. Working with the Upland Lions Club, Cindy found a fundraiser for the community when she learned a local resident was selling a Hawaiian Shave Ice business; after research, the club adopted the project, and since the summer of 2007 the proceeds have allowed the club to do more for the Town of Upland and its residents. Rick and Cindy have also been co-organizers, with other Lions members, of the Upland Senior Citizens Activity Center and the Eastbrook Elementary Backpack Program. Cindy served as district coordinator for more than 300 Girl Scouts in the Eastbrook School System from 1979 to 1992, leading up to three troops a year. Cindy worked as a bookkeeper for 23 years before retiring after 13 years as a legal secretary, and Rick retired from Chrysler in Kokomo. Having no children, they made service to those in need their mission, helping people of all ages and working for more than 45 years to create memories for the Upland community.
