Anna Mac Clarke, a Lawrenceburg native, was one of the first black women in Kentucky to enlist during World War II. She joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in 1942 and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant the next year in the newly named Women's Army Corps. A 1937 graduate of Lawrenceburg's Colored High School, she earned a B.A. from Kentucky State College. After enlisting, she became the only African American in the 15th Officer Training Class at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. In 1943, she was the first black WAAC assigned to duty with an all-white company as platoon commander at the 4th Co., 3rd Regt. While stationed at Douglas Air Field, Arizona, she led the fight to desegregate the base theater. She is buried at Woodlawn Hills Cemetery, Stringtown.
