Born in Liberty, Indiana, Ambrose E. Burnside invented the breech-loading rifle in 1856. He commanded a brigade at First Bull Run and the Army of the Potomac at Fredericksburg. He was commander of the Army of Ohio when Morgan's Raiders were captured.
