Fort Bridgman was the first white settlement in Vernon, Vermont. Built in 1737, it was the scene of many Indian massacres and was sacked and burned by Indians for the third time on June 27, 1755, after Caleb Howe was slain and fourteen persons were taken captive, including his wife Jemima Howe and their seven children. Land for this purpose was given by the Hubbard Brothers, and the boulder came from the Howe Farm through Hon. George E. Howe of Boston, Massachusetts, a lineal descendant of Caleb and Jemima Howe.
