Little Yellow Mountain rises 5,504 feet in North Carolina’s High Country, entirely within Pisgah National Forest along the Avery and Mitchell county line. Its slopes feed streams flowing into the North Toe River. The mountain is notable for a local irony: despite its name, it stands 64 feet higher than nearby Big Yellow Mountain. Its recent history reflects conservation efforts as well. On December 3, 2009, The Nature Conservancy announced the acquisition of 466 acres at the summit, intending to transfer the land to the North Carolina State Parks System as part of the Yellow Mountain State Natural Area.
