This road largely followed the Catawba Path in 1698. Widened by Public Act in 1753 and called "The Great Charleston Road," it joined Charleston with Camden and the Back Country. Indians, pack-animals laden with hides, drovers, rolled hogsheads of produce, wagoners, and stagecoaches traveled over it. The armies of two wars also passed over it, and like other main roads, it has often been called "The King's Highway."
