Samuel Chase, a native of Somerset County, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, served as judge of the Baltimore County Court from 1788 to 1789 and again from 1792 to 1794, was judge of the General Court of Maryland from 1792 to 1796, and served as a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1796 to 1811.
