Little River Light stands on Little River Island at the mouth of the Little River in Cutler, Maine, guarding the entrance to a tidal inlet since the station was authorized in 1846 and first lit the next year. The present 35-foot iron lighthouse, built in 1876 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, is one of Maine’s few iron towers. Its station includes an 1888 keeper’s house, an 1881 boathouse, and a 1905 oilhouse. After changing lenses over time, the station was automated in 1975 and the historic lantern went dark until restoration returned a light to it in 2001. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
