In September 1857 the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad arrived here, drawing businesses and residents from nearby Panola, also known as Panola Landing, a port on the south bank of the Tallahatchie River. The new railroad hub was named for James Wesley Bates, a Methodist minister and railroad conductor.
