Old House Plantation, also called Daniel Heyward Plantation, is an archaeological site near Ridgeland, South Carolina, first settled in 1743. It grew from a 500-acre plantation to 16,000 acres before fire destroyed it in 1865. Closely associated with the Heyward family, it is especially significant as both the birthplace and burial place of Thomas Heyward Jr., one of South Carolina’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence. Archaeological evidence points to a large plantation complex with the main house, probable outbuildings including a kitchen, tidal mill, stable, likely slave quarters, and a brick-walled family cemetery. The plantation likely remained active into the early 19th century.
