Thomas Heyward, Jr. was a member of the South Carolina Provincial Congress and Council of Safety and of the Continental Congress. He signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, served as a captain of militia at the Battle of Port Royal and the Siege of Charleston, was a prisoner of war in 1780-81, and served as a Circuit Court Judge from 1778-89.
