Fairport Harbor Light stands on Lake Erie at Fairport Harbor, Ohio, where the growing importance of the Grand River harbor led to construction of a lighthouse and pier in the 1820s. A first brick lighthouse was completed in 1826 but later proved unsound, so Congress funded a replacement in 1869 and the present sandstone tower was first lit in 1871. Its fixed white beacon, focused by a third-order Fresnel lens, guided vessels for decades until a breakwater light made it obsolete in 1925. Saved from demolition by local advocacy, the lighthouse became part of the Fairport Marine Museum and remains a center for preserving local maritime history.
