In ancient days a stately column or pillar honored persons of nobility and dignity who contributed much to the community or state, while a broken column honored those who died or were struck down and cut off in the vigor of life and signified the great loss suffered by the community. Here it honors the noble and valiant sons of Breathitt County lost during the Korean War.
