The old "Bowery" was the first place of worship used by members of the Latter Day Saints Church who came to St. Johns in 1879-1880. The Assembly Hall, located on the northwest corner of the public square, was erected in 1882. Built of logs, it served the community for school, church, and all public assemblies. Here the St. Johns stake of the L.D.S. Church was organized July 23, 1887. The church academy was founded January 14, 1889, and the building was dedicated December 16, 1900.
