The Cowen B&O Railroad Depot was the center of community life from 1893 until the last passenger train left in 1956. The Cowen Fire of 1911 completely destroyed the building, but it was rebuilt in less than 30 days and served as the town's financial institution, allowing insurance claims to be telegraphed out and rebuilding funds to be wired in. Over the years, sheep, automobiles, paychecks, movie film reels, and even houses passed through the depot, and soldiers departed from it for training and deployment in both world wars. It remains a reminder of Cowen's railroad history and of the many lives shaped by this community fixture.
