Million Dollar View Scenic Byway is part of a national scenic byway program created to form a distinctive collection of American roads, their stories, and treasured places. Scenic byways pass through beautiful country and offer opportunities to experience local culture and history, and 125 National Scenic Byways had been designated by 2009. In Maine, federal funds enhance byways and they are administered through MaineDOT. The area around Million Dollar View offers large and small attractions, including lakes, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, snow-sledding, sporting camps, Maine Guides, scenic backroads, cafes, and welcoming communities. The vista also reveals forest succession across working forest, bog and marsh, and old farm fields returning to forest. Weston and Danforth contain varied habitats that support a rich mix of species, and regenerating logged areas, natural blowdowns, and clearings provide habitat for animals including moose, ruffed grouse, and migratory songbirds. In Maine, 9,500 square miles are the only federally designated critical lynx habitat in the Eastern U.S. The Canada lynx depends primarily on snowshoe hare living in dense spruce-fir thickets that often grow after logging or fires create clearings, and these threatened cats also require abundant large woody debris piles for dens and deep, fluffy, prolonged winter snows.
