During World War II, approximately 8,700 mariners were killed at sea, approximately 11,000 were wounded, 604 became prisoners, and 60 died in prison camps. The Merchant Marines delivered goods when and where needed in operations across every ocean and sea in the most difficult and dangerous transportation job ever undertaken.
