Montpelier served as the parish seat from 1812 to 1832, housed a land office that was a clearinghouse for public lands between the Mississippi and the Pearl Rivers from 1812 to 1837, was the site of Montpelier Academy from 1833 to 1840, and had the early post office of St. Helena from 1814 to 1859; it was connected to the Natchez Trace.
