The Kill Devil Hills Life Saving Station, built in 1878 as one of 11 stations erected along the Outer Banks at the turn of the century, served a lifesaving service that relied on local community members to respond to frequent shipwrecks along the sandy barrier islands. It later gained added historical significance through its association with the Wright Brothers and man's first flight. Located one mile from the Wright Brothers' camp, surfmen A.D. Etheridge, W.C. Brinkley, and W.S. Dough assisted Orville and Wilbur and witnessed their first successful flight, while a fourth surfman, John T. Daniels, snapped the photograph that documented the event. That image was later awarded the title "The Photograph of the 20th century." In May 1986, the Kill Devil Hills Life Saving Station was moved to this location, and the move and all restoration were achieved with private funds by Twiddy and Company.
