Twiddy and Company began preservation in Corolla Village in 1986, first with the Kill Devil Hills Lifesaving Station, built in 1878 and moved to Corolla from its original oceanfront site as required by its sale. Further preservation followed in 1998 as other properties became available, beginning with the Lewark/Gray home and the Parker home. These old homes now host merchants and nonprofits including Lovie’s Kitchen Table and the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. The century old schoolhouse was restored in 1999, and in August 2012 the school bell rang again as local children attended a new public charter school. Visitors can also explore the marshes and sounds with Coastal Explorations and enjoy The Village Garden planted with heirloom perennials and shrubs.
