Currituck Beach Light was built in Corolla, North Carolina, to warn ships off a dangerous, unlit stretch of the Outer Banks between Cape Henry and Bodie Island, where repeated wrecks had caused losses of vessels, cargo, and lives. Completed in 1875, it was the last major brick lighthouse built on the Outer Banks and remains notable for its unpainted red brick exterior. Its original first-order Fresnel lens still operates, and the beacon continues to guide mariners with an automated light visible for 18 nautical miles. Restored and maintained in recent decades, the lighthouse remains both a historic landmark and an active aid to navigation.
