Palisade Head is a rocky promontory on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior, part of Tettegouche State Park and formed from a rhyolitic lava flow laid down about 1.1 billion years ago during the Midcontinent Rift. Its unusually hard volcanic rock resisted erosion, leaving it and nearby Shovel Point rising prominently above the lake. The headland projects into Lake Superior with steep cliffs and a summit about 335 feet above the water, creating one of the North Shore’s most dramatic landscapes. Largely undeveloped, it is known for sweeping views, traditional rock climbing, nesting peregrine falcons and bald eagles, migrating hawks, and the hazards posed by its exposed cliff edge.
