In summer at Hanging Rock, between spring’s frenzy and winter’s preparations, residents eat and raise their young as the forest becomes a food factory. Chlorophyll uses the sun’s energy during the long days to make food for trees and other green plants, giving leaves their green color. As plants grow, insects keep feeding in many ways, with some drinking plant juices, others chewing trunks and branches, many eating leaves, and some preying on other insects. Reptiles and amphibians spend most of their time feeding and maintaining body temperature by cooling in streams or warming in sunshine. In early summer, most parent birds work from sunrise to sunset gathering food for hungry nestlings. Signs of this feeding include mushrooms with triangular bites from box turtles, holes in leaves left by insects, and pellets on the forest floor that are the remains of an owl’s dinner and contain the bones of its last prey.
