Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park preserves nearly two miles of Lake Tahoe’s western shore, about 2,500 acres of high Sierra forest, meadows, and the General Creek valley. Long used by the Washoe as a summer home, it later included William “General” Phipps’s 1860 cabin and, from 1903, the Hellman family’s Pine Lodge estate, sold to California in 1965 when the park was established. Renamed in 2003 for Edwin L. Z'berg, the park also includes old-growth forest, landscapes altered by logging and fire management, and former 1960 Winter Olympics biathlon and cross-country skiing terrain. Today it remains a major natural, historic, and winter recreation area.
