Constructed in 1916 by the Babcock brothers in honor of their mother, Harriet Vose Babcock, this building was first called Mother’s Home and was intended as a work home for employees of the Babcock Lumber Co. For more than 100 years it has provided lodging for workers, residents, and tourists. After the original name faded, it became the Babcock Hotel, and in 1927 G.W. "Pop" Munz and Paulina Munz purchased it, giving it the name Munz Hotel. Born in Germany, the couple had moved to the United States and lived in New Orleans, Louisiana, where Mr. Munz worked as a chef, before moving to Tellico in the late 1910s to early 1920s and operating the hotel before buying it. Local stories recall his elaborate meals for guests, and the original cast iron stove remains in the building. In 1922, Tellico Plains High School seniors held their class dinner in the back room of the Munz Hotel. After Pop died in 1948, his family kept the hotel in business until 1975, when Ferd and Sina Cole purchased it, and it remained in business until the early 2000s. Much of the original furniture is still in place, and the upstairs hall contains 12 guest rooms and 2 bathrooms. For decades the building has remained a cherished part of Tellico, remembered for family visits, porch sales, Christmas open houses under the Coles, and its enduring antique character.
