Mount Arkansas is a 13,795-foot peak in central Colorado’s Mosquito Range, east of the Continental Divide and northeast of Leadville. Rising steeply above the headwaters of the East Fork Arkansas River, it has about 3,400 feet of relief in just two miles and stands out prominently from Highway 91 near Fremont Pass. In Lake County it is the twelfth-highest peak and ranks 107th among Colorado summits. Its exposed height creates an alpine subarctic climate with snowy winters, cool to warm summers, and frequent summer thunderstorms. Recorded in print since 1877, it is now especially known as one of Colorado’s “thirteeners” and as a popular hiking destination.
