Mount Democrat is a fourteen-thousand-foot summit in Colorado’s Mosquito Range, near Alma and the Continental Divide, long favored as one of the state’s more accessible fourteeners. Its standard hike from Kite Lake is short but still requires care because of loose rock and slippery descent, and the mountain is also part of the DeCaLiBron Loop. Public access became a major issue when closures sharply reduced visitation, then improved in 2023 after the Conservation Fund bought land including the trailhead and summit for transfer to the United States Forest Service. The peak also reflects nineteenth-century politics and a mining past still visible in surviving works and the Kentucky Belle Mine.
