Mingus Mountain rises in Arizona’s Black Hills within Prescott National Forest, about halfway between Cottonwood and Prescott on State Route 89A. Its summit, reached by Forest Service roads, offers wide views over the Verde Valley, Sycamore Canyon Wilderness, and nearby communities, and it connects with recreation around the Woodchute Wilderness and area campgrounds. The mountain’s name is commonly tied either to Joseph and Jacob Mingus, brothers who settled nearby in the 1880s and operated a sawmill, or to William Mingus, a prospector active there in the 1870s. The summit also includes the historic Mingus Lookout Complex and serves as a broadcasting and hang gliding site.
