Bill Williams Peak is a remote 13,389-foot mountain in central Colorado, in the Hunter–Fryingpan Wilderness east of Aspen, and the highest point of the Williams Mountains in the Sawatch Range. Though officially unnamed, it is widely known by this name and ranks among Colorado’s highest major summits. The peak and its range honor William Sherley “Old Bill” Williams, a mountain man linked to John C. Frémont’s disastrous 1848 railroad-route expedition through the Rockies. After warning against the winter route, Williams helped lead survivors toward Taos; in March 1849, he and Dr. Benjamin Kern were killed by Ute warriors while searching for more survivors. Today the mountain remains mainly a mountaineering and backcountry destination.
