Hunter–Fryingpan Wilderness is a federally protected backcountry in Colorado’s White River National Forest, east of Aspen. Created in 1978, it spans 82,026 acres and includes the headwaters of Hunter Creek and the Fryingpan River as well as numerous peaks in the Williams Mountains. On its eastern side it adjoins the Mount Massive Wilderness, with the Continental Divide forming the boundary between the two areas. High mountain terrain and river headwaters shape the landscape, and about 50 miles of trails pass through this part of one of Colorado’s best-known national forests.
