Zion Canyon’s main road follows the North Fork of the Virgin River along the canyon floor for about nine miles from the park’s south boundary to the Temple of Sinawava. First built in 1916 as a single-lane dirt road, it was extended in 1925 and rebuilt on a new alignment in 1931 and 1932, with further work by the Civilian Conservation Corps through 1942. Designed in the National Park Service’s naturalistic 1930s style, it used local red sandstone and rustic methods to blend with the landscape. Since 2000, seasonal shuttle buses have limited private traffic through the narrow canyon.
