Zion Lodge is the principal historic lodging complex in Zion National Park and an important example of early national park architecture shaped by tourism, railroad promotion, and conservation policy. Conceived in 1924 as a compromise between a large hotel and smaller-scale canyon development, it was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood in a restrained rustic style that fit the valley floor. Although the main lodge burned in 1966 and was rebuilt quickly with diminished character, a 1990 remodel restored its earlier appearance. Original cabins, dormitories, and support buildings survive as part of the Zion Lodge Historic District. In 1995, a landslide cut off the canyon exit road and temporarily stranded guests and employees at the lodge.
