The Oblong Meeting House of the Society of Friends was first erected in 1742 south of this road, and the present building was erected in 1764. The first effective action against slavery was taken here in 1767. In January 1779 it was occupied as a hospital by Revolutionary soldiers, many of whom are buried south of the road. The meeting divided in 1828, and meetings in this house ceased in 1885.
