In the Cumberland Valley, these markets reflect the region's diverse farming through seasonally available fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, homemade items, and specialties such as pumpkins, gourds, chrysanthemums, multi-colored field corn, and ornamental cabbage. For small farmers, direct sales to consumers provide important additional income, help build community relationships, keep family farms in the family, promote direct farm-to-consumer marketing, educate people about the source of their food, provide local jobs, and keep food dollars in the local economy. Buying locally produced foods also reduces carbon footprint and packaging needs because the food travels only a short distance, while encouraging greater crop variety and biodiversity that benefit the local environment. The Cumberland Valley has a long tradition of selling farm-fresh produce in markets specializing in locally grown goods, including the Carlisle Market House, which stood from 1878 to 1952 on the site of the present "New Courthouse," and farmers continue that tradition at numerous indoor and open-air markets throughout the valley.
