Fort Hamilton was built at the direction of Benjamin Franklin and was named after James Hamilton, a member of the Governor's Council. It stood northwest of here and was garrisoned from 1755 to 1757 as one of a chain of forts later replaced by Fort Penn. It was abandoned in 1757.
