Six Mile Run Reservoir Site
Nature
Six Mile Run Reservoir Site is a 3,037-acre protected area in Franklin Township, New Jersey, beside the Delaware and Raritan Canal. Once considered for a reservoir that would have flooded the Six Mile Run watershed, the land was debated for decades before the state acquired it in 1970 for future water supply and recreation. After alternative water sources were found, the reservoir plan was abandoned and the property entered the state park system in 1993. Land removed from cultivation has since undergone old field succession, returning toward woodland. The name Six Mile Run comes from an early surveyor’s rough distance estimate, not a precise measurement.
