Salt River Canyon Wilderness
Nature
Salt River Canyon Wilderness is a 32,115-acre protected area in Arizona within Tonto National Forest, shaped by the Salt River as it cuts a deep canyon through its entire length. Elevations range from about 2,200 feet at the canyon’s lower end to 4,200 feet on White Ledge Mountain. With no maintained trails, movement depends on the river and rugged terrain. The wilderness is particularly known for white-water recreation during a short season from March 1 to May 15, when rafting and kayaking follow 27 sets of rapids and many side creeks. During that period, permits are required and groups are limited to 15 people.
